Not long ago, I watched a captivating nature film about penguins. There was one moment that etched itself in my heart: a family of penguins stood on a high, isolated cliff, over 300 feet above the ocean.
At the top of the cliff were young penguins who had been born there and were now ready to step out into the world on their own. To survive, they had to do the last thing they ever wanted to do: jump into the ocean, where they would find food.
The first to jump was the father. He didn’t hesitate – he gathered all his courage, looked ahead, and jumped as far as he could to avoid the sharp rocks lining the cliff. He stretched his awkward wings, gliding through the air for a few seconds before softening his landing in the water as much as possible.
Next came a young, brave penguin. He gave a big push with his legs, stretched his tiny wings in the air, and safely made it into the water.
But there were also those who were afraid...
Some hesitated. They tried to get closer to the edge cautiously, just a little bit, and a little more. When they finally reached the edge, there was nowhere left to go. Others pulled back from making a big jump and tried a smaller leap, closer to where they stood.
All of these found themselves crashing into the rocks during their fall, again and again, all the way to the bottom, on a brutal journey that left them no chance of survival.
That scene stayed with me.
I thought to myself: how often do we, humans, face a challenge, a dream, or a goal – and are afraid to jump?
How often do we inch closer slowly, hesitate, fear the unknown, try to “test the waters” cautiously... and in reality, it’s the small steps, the hesitation, that put us at risk.
Sometimes, to reach a better place, to achieve a dream, to truly succeed – we have to leap far. We have to dare. Trust ourselves. Gather all our courage and take the biggest leap we can.
That doesn’t mean being reckless or avoid thinking – but understanding that sometimes, the safest way is having the courage to go all the way. Because those who try to “roll” slowly, or are afraid to take the big step, may get stuck on the rocks of life – of fear, doubt, worry.
So, the next time you face a challenge, a dream, or a change – remember the penguins.
Ask yourself: “Am I ready to leap far?”
“Am I giving myself a real chance to succeed, or am I clinging to the rocks out of fear?”
And sometimes, it’s the big leap that takes us the furthest, the safest, the closest to our goal.
So don’t be afraid to jump – because only those who dare, reach distances they never dreamed of.
