Some people walk into a room and you immediately feel the light and joy they bring with them. And there are people who seem as though someone slowly turned down the light and joy inside them, little by little, without them even noticing.
The spark of joy exists within each and every one of us. Sometimes it burns brightly, and sometimes it rests deep beneath fatigue, worries, and routine. But even when it seems deem, it never truly disappears.
Joy is an energy that revitalizes the body, strengthens the immune system, and softens the way we see the world. When we are joyful, we are filled with life force, think more creatively, and are able to give of ourselves to others without immediately feeling depleted.
The challenge begins when we tie our joy to what happens outside of us— to gifts we've received, compliments, or social outings. Then, when those things are absent, our spark of joy fades, and we feel that “it's impossible to be joyful right now.”
But there is another kind of joy: a joy that comes from within. A simple way to awaken and reignite your spark of joy is through gratitude— giving thanks not only for what you have here and now, but also for what has not yet arrived, yet your heart longs for.
When you practice gratitude for what already exists in your life, you begin to feel loved, and little by little your inner joy grows stronger and finds its place.
And when you add gratitude for what is still to come—for the good things waiting for you, the successes, insights, and love that are on their way— you invite hope, faith, and a deep sense of anticipation into your life.
At this point, your joy is no longer dependent on gifts, compliments, or special events. It rests on your inner choice to see life as a gift, and on the knowledge that there is a guiding presence leading you forward, even when you cannot yet see the outcome. This is a joy that depends on no external factor—only on you.
And when the spark of joy burns brightly within you, something throughout your entire being comes alive. Your life force increases, your energy is renewed, your desire to do good expands, and your hope for a better future grows. You wake up in the morning with a greater desire to truly live your life, not merely survive it.
Then something else happens: you not only feel better, you become a spark of joy in the lives of others. A small compliment, a smile, a phone call, genuine listening, or one act of kindness each day can reignite a fading spark in someone else.
When you wake up tomorrow morning, before reaching for your phone or rushing into your day, close your eyes for a moment and give thanks in your heart for three things you already have in your life—and for three things that are still on their way.
Notice how it feels to begin your day from a place of gratitude, with a small spark of joy beginning to glow.
Wishing you days filled with light and inner joy,
❤️ Hannah
